Subject Overview

The Science department comprises of Biology, Chemistry and Physics specialists with a wealth of experience. The well-equipped labs provide students with lots of opportunity for practical investigation. Whilst teaching a full curriculum of content, students are taught about changes in scientific development and real life application of the knowledge and skills they learn. Students are entered for the KS4 course which is appropriate to their ability; this may be the combined qualifications or as separate Sciences at the higher or foundation level.

Our students begin the GCSE pathway in year 9. The exam board we use is AQA. Students follow either the double Science (Trilogy) or triple Science pathway. Double Science is assessed by six, 1 hour and 15 minutes exams at the end of Year 11, (two exams in each discipline). Triple Science is also assessed with six exams, however, each is 1 hour and 45 minutes long. All content is assessed by exam, although students complete placemats based on the required practicals, which build their practical and scientific skills, (25% of each exam will test this learning).

Extra Curricular Opportunities

STEAM club runs for Key Stage 3 students, whilst Science Clinic runs weekly for Key Stage 4 students. Here students are able to get specialist support for any questions they have relating to the Science curriculum. The Science department also work in tandem with the Careers department to arrange trips with STEAM focus.
