Science

KS3

Year 7 follow a carrousel system where all groups start with a introduction to Laboratory safety course, the then follow the following topics:

Cells, Reproduction, Environment, Variation, Acids and Alkalis, Chemical Reactions, Particles, Solutions, Energy Resources, Electrical Circuits, Forces and The Solar System.

Year Eight also follow a Carrousel, subjects covered are:

Food, Respiration, Microbes, Ecology, Atoms and Elements, Compounds and Mixtures, Rocks, Heating and Cooling, Magnets, Lights and Sound

All year seven and eight topics are assessed using unit tests and extended tasks to assign a level for that topic.

Year Nine follow a bespoke scheme of work to prepare them for the demands of a GCSE course, this includes some of the fundamental subjects that will be covered in the GCSE together with practice controlled assessment tasks.

Biology, Cells, DNA, organs, Plants and Animal behaviour

Chemistry: Atoms, periodic table, bonding and reactivity

Physics: Waves, The Electromagnetic Spectrum, Forces, Radioactivity

All year nines will have one teacher for the entire year and follow these subjects in a carrousel through the year.

KS4

Subject: Science, GCSEs offered BTEC Applied Science, Single Science, Additional Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Exam Boards: Year ten – AQA, Year eleven – Edexcel

Key content: Year 10 – Content to include the following subjects up till Christmas

Biology: Cells, organs, molecular Biology, control systems

Chemistry: Atoms and bonding, chemical properties, equations, Periodic table

Physics: Energy, electricity,

Year eleven Sets T1-T3: Content to include the following up till the November Mocks, Additional candidates to cover the same subjects up until Easter.

Biology: DNA technology, Plant processes, Body systems (to include blood and digestion), evolution and sampling techniques

Chemistry: Bonding, analysis, quantitative chemistry, separation techniques, chemical calculations

Physics: Radioactivity, electricity, energy transformations, motion, road safety

BTEC Applied Science will continue to follow the assessment scheme which covers the following topics:

Biology: health and fitness, the environment, DNA, classification

Chemistry: Atoms and elements, periodic reactions, rates of reaction, earthquakes and environmental chemistry

Physics: The solar system and the universe, electricity, energy transformations, the electromagnetic spectrum and radioactivity

Assessment

For Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Science and Additional Science – 75% exam (three papers per qualification) and 25% controlled assessment. This remains the same for years ten and eleven.

For all qualifications it is planned for the controlled assessments to be completed directly after the November Mocks DATE. Year ten are to complete controlled assessments after the June exams in the summer term in preparation for year eleven.

For all examined qualifications there are three exam papers per subject, for example for GCSE Biology there is B1, B2, B3.

Progression Routes: Pupils that study any of the examined subjects can go to study separate sciences at Sixth form college. BTEC science candidates can go on to complete an applied science A level which again combines the sciences.

Useful visits: ?? National history Museum and the science museum, intech in Winchester, Marwell Zoological park.
