Learning Support
The Special Educational Needs Department consists of a team of dedicated learning support staff, committed to meeting student’s individual needs. The department has qualified, experienced teachers who work closely with teaching assistants and teaching staff to provide a ‘whole school approach’ to learning support.
The department has high expectations of students and promotes a positive ethos which builds on their strengths. Students are placed in classes where they will be able to fulfil their potential. A relatively small teaching group is appropriate for some students, which in turn provides the opportunity to maximise teacher time and expertise.
Support for a wide range of individual needs is available within class across the curriculum. Careful monitoring of progress, target setting, reviewing and assessment are an integral part of departmental work, which is child centred in order to promote the highest potential in each student. Close relationships with professional outside agencies are maintained.
We believe that the encouragement and support of parents, working in partnership with school is the best way to meet special educational needs.
Several extra-curricular activities, such as The Oasis and Sanctuary clubs along with drop-in study group for KS4 students are available to help meet specific needs and difficulties. Students of all abilities are welcome to join.
The department is proud of the results its students achieve. We aim for our students to leave school as confident, competent, independent learners ready to seek success in the next stage of their learning journey.
